Introduction to Disability

Do you avoid people with disabilities because you don't know what to say? Do you wonder how to talk to someone with a disability? Does disability make you uncomfortable? Do you have questions about disability, but are afraid they're too personal to ask?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, this class is for you. Introduction to Disability will take you through the basics of disability etiquette, dismantle stereotypes, and leave you with a better and more realistic understanding of the disability experience.

About the Teacher

Jean-Marie Lawrence is 33 years old and lives an interdependent life in Chattanooga, TN with her 3 cats (Bella, Binx, and Weasley) and her Service Dog in Training, Dobby. She has Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy and has been a wheelchair user for 21 years.

Jean-Marie received her BS in Political Science in 2010 and her Master of Public Administration in 2012, both from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She currently works full time at her Alma Mater as the Emergency Management Planner.

When not working, Jean-Marie is advocating for disability rights, as well as civil and animal rights. She is a firm believer in the Constitution and the rights of all people to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. When she needs a break, she enjoys painting, writing poetry, reading, and binge watching good tv shows.
